The NBA Finals will resume tonight in a presumably much more comfortable AT&T Center when the San Antonio Spurs welcome the Miami Heat. You can watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO or listen to the action on TSN Radio 1050 at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Spurs grabbed a 1-0 series lead Thursday night in the sweltering heat of a late spring San Antonio night. Of course, it didnt help that the AT&T Centers air conditioner malfunctioned and didnt work through the course of the game. As temperatures soared into the mid-90s, the Spurs emerged with a 110-95 victory, but the busted AC unit played a major role. LeBron James was forced to leave the game midway through the fourth quarter due to cramping. James has faced cramping issues in the past and the four-time MVP was unable to move Thursday following a layup to get the game within two. "My body just shut down, basically my body said, okay, enough jumping for you for the night. Youve had enough," James said after practice on Friday. "Nothing I could do about it." That didnt stop social media from exploding, questioning James toughness. "I really dont care what people say about me," noted James. The two-time Finals MVP, the Heat, the Spurs and frankly anyone in attendance Sunday night should feel relieved. The AT&T Center staff fixed the problem and it should be very comfortable for Game 2. "It will be fine. Weve been assured of that," said Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. The extreme conditions played a role in Game 1, but were the same for both squads. When James had to be carried back to the bench, the Spurs finished the game on a 31-9 run with six minutes to go. Danny Green, who set an NBA Finals record with 27 made 3-pointers last year, caught fire late in Game 1. He drained three long balls during the decisive run and finished with 13 points. Tim Duncan contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds, Tony Parker poured in 19 points and handed out eight assists, and Manu Ginobili totaled 16 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who shot a scorching 14-of-16 from the floor in the fourth, including a perfect 6-of-6 mark from long distance. Tiago Splitter added 14 points and Boris Diaw pulled down 10 rebounds. The Spurs shot 59 percent for the game and 52 percent from long range. "Were not as good as we used to be defensively. So if thats going to diminish, you need to do something at the other end of the floor to make up for it," explained coach Gregg Popovich. "We changed our pace, and the way we approach things at the other end of the floor to make up for what were going to lose defensively. Thats the bottom line." James paced the Heat with 25 points and six assists, while Wade and Bosh supplied 19 and 18 points, respectively, in the setback. "We have to finish the game better, no matter who is on the floor," Wade said, referring to the absence of James. Ray Allen provided a spark off the bench with 16 points, while another veteran, Rashard Lewis, scored 10. The Heat have won 12 straight following a loss in the postseason and theres no reason to panic. Miami lost the first game in each of the last two Finals and went on to win the series. The series shifts to South Beach for Game 3 Tuesday night. Memphis Grizzlies Gear . However, he and the New York Rangers skated off the ice Wednesday with a key 3-1 victory over the rival Philadelphia Flyers and an important two points in the Metropolitan Division playoff race. Lundqvist stopped 30 shots and came within 1:53 of his second shutout in three games. That was enough to earn his 30th win — a mark he has reached eight times in his nine-season NHL career. "It was huge. I thought we played a really strong game," said Lundqvist, who is in 24th place on the NHL win list with 306. "We just have to keep going, not think too much, just keep on our details." Lundqvist was honoured Monday for recently breaking the Rangers records for career wins and shutouts. The Rangers stretched their season-best winning streak to five games, and now embark on a four-game, Western Conference trip. It is their longest winning run since another five-game spurt from Dec. 30, 2011 to Jan. 10, 2012. The second-place Rangers moved three points ahead of third-place Philadelphia by winning what could be a playoff preview. New York has eight games remaining, and the Flyers have 10 left. "Its going to pay off to not make it too complicated for ourselves or think about the standings," Lundqvist said. Derek Dorsett scored in the first period, defenceman Ryan McDonagh added a goal in the second, and Dominic Moore made it 3-0 in the third against Steve Mason, who made 26 saves. The Flyers Jakub Voracek scored his 21st goal off a faceoff with 1:53 to go to make it 3-1. Voracek scored for the third straight game, but it was too little, too late for Philadelphia. The Flyers, who had a five-game winning streak broken against Los Angeles on Monday, have dropped two in a row for the first time since an 0-3-1 skid from Jan. 20-25. "We didnt play our game. We didnt have energy. It was a weird game," Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. "We have to do a better job of getting ready. We had some big wins over good teams lately. Now we need some rest." McDonagh, who has been on an offensive hot streak recently, did it all in scoring his 14th of the season to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. He stopped a clearing attempt at the centre of the blue line, skated into the right circle, and snapped off a hard, rising wrist shot that nestled into the top right corner of the net. "We were able to catch them throwing pucks, and our D and eveerybody did a good job keeping pucks alive," McDonagh said.dddddddddddd "We really wore them down in the offensive zone." McDonagh, who assisted on the Rangers tying goal late in regulation against Phoenix on Monday and then netted the winner in overtime as part of a career-best, three-point night, has six goals and seven assists in his past 13 games. "For any team to win, you need your top players playing at a high level," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "(Lundqvist) has found his game, and Ryan McDonagh has just been a force out there. Hes got to be getting some consideration for the Norris (Trophy) the way he is playing offensively and defensively." Lundqvist did the rest in a quieter second period when his teammates outshot the Flyers 17-10. He moved well and didnt seem bothered by constant traffic in the crease. His best stop came with 5:23 left when he slid to his right to get his pad on a shot by Adam Hall off a rebound in tight. He then sprawled on his stomach and covered the puck with his glove. In the opening minute of the second, Lundqvist denied Wayne Simmonds on a redirected shot and then pounced on the rebound. Moore gave Lundqvist breathing room when he scored his sixth of the season with 12:21 remaining. "We didnt come out with our best effort," Mason said. "We have to be better in big games like this." Despite being outshot and outchanced by Philadelphia in the first, the Rangers carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission thanks to Dorsetts fourth of the season. Mason tried to swing the puck from behind his net up the left-wing boards, but it was intercepted by Brian Boyle along the wall. Boyle sent the puck in front to Dorsett, who knocked it down, gathered it and sent in a backhander at 8:41. The Flyers picked up the pace and built a 15-6 shots edge in the first and nearly tied it during a late power play. "Philly dominated us as far as shots, and they got some chances on that power play at the end," Vigneault said of the first period, "but that is when your goaltender has to come up big. "When we had some breakdowns, he was the difference." NOTES: With Chris Kreider sidelined by a hand injury, the Rangers called up centre J.T. Miller from Hartford (AHL). Kreider wont accompany New York on its trip that begins Friday at Calgary. ... The Flyers fell to 8-3-1 in March and 12-4-1 since Feb. 1. ... The Rangers have won eight straight over the Flyers at home, dating to March 6, 2011. ' ' '

CALGARY - The Continental Cup of Curling served as an incubator for mixed doubles curling. The World Curling Federation believes the fast-forward version of the sport has matured enough for inclusion into the 2018 Winter Olympics. The WCF has asked the International Olympic Committee to add mixed doubles to the curling menu in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The IOCs programme commission is expected to decide on it and other proposed sports in April.A team consisting of just a male and female curler sliding out of the hack and chasing their own rocks down the ice is certainly a novelty for those who follow the sport.Mixed doubles has been part of the World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curlings format since the events inception in 2002.To give mixed doubles more legitimacy and thus more consideration by the IOC, the WCF introduced a world championship in 2008.The eighth world mixed doubles championship will be in Sochi, Russia, in April at the same time the IOC is meeting there. We have done our homework, WCF president Kate Caithness told The Associated Press in 2013. Hopefully it will appeal to the IOC.The worlds top curlers are invited to the Continental Cup and for most, its the only time they ever play mixed doubles.Team Canada and Team Europe square off in a second round of mixed doubles Saturday at this years event here. Its an interesting concept, said E.J. Harnden, who plays second for Olympic champion Brad Jacobs. Its fun for the audience and fans to watch. Theres a lot of action, big ends back and forth. I think the more we can get the sport of curling in the spotlight and on the international stage, more television coverage, more awareness is great for the game of curling.Swedish skip Niklas Edin isnt a fan of mixed doubles. The Olympic bronze medallist says if the IOC adds another curling event to the Winter Games, hed prefer full mixed gender teams. Its too much up to chance. You have no sweepers. Its boring to watch actually, Edin stated. I see how other teams like it, but I dont think its a good sport for the Olympics. You dont get good ice conditions when you dont have sweepers and you throw (to) one side (of the ice) all the time. You see so many big mistakes. The quality is too low. What mixed doubles has working in its favour for Olympic inclusion is traditional curling countries dont dominate it.Canadas stars dont have time to play in it because of their team commitments. Canada has won just one medal — a bronze — in the seven-year history of the world championship.Hungary won a world title in 2013 with Spain, New Zealand, France, and Austria also finishing on the podium in other years.Stremlaw says there are several arguments in favour of mixed doubles being in the Olympics. Thered be enough ice time to fit it into the 16 days of competition, it would add no more than two athletes per country and the mixed gender aspect would appeal to the IOC, which wants gender equality Olympic Games. The fact that it gives a chance to other curling nations to aspire to greatness, to aspire to podiums, the non-traditional ones, I think all of those things work in its favour in a massive way, Stremlaw said. The CCA hosts an annual mixed doubles championship to qualify a team for the world championship, but the discipline hasnt been a high priority for the organization. That would change quickly if the IOC gave it the green light for 2018. As a powerhouse country in the sport, there would be a sudden ramping up of mixed doubles in Canada. If it is a full-fledged Olympic sport, theres going to be massive changes I think in terms of training, what athletes are involved and certainly as the governing body, were going to have to make further investments, Stremlaw said. Were going to have pressure from Sport Canada, Own The Podium, Canadian Olympic Committee because theres going to be another Olympic medal.Well have to set up a whole new system that will ensure podium excellence. After winning gold in Sochi in February, Harnden and Jacobs third Ryan Fry could not imagine competing in mens curling and mixed doubles at the same Winter Games.I cant speak for everyone, but I would never try and play in both, Fry said. Its definitely two different sports. The strategy and the athleticism and the type of relationship you need to have with your partner is a completely different dynamic than you have with your team. Lubomir Visnovsky Jersey .Y. - Alex Rodriguez paid $305,000 for evidence that could be used in the case involving the Biogenesis of America drug clinic, the Daily News reported Saturday.CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes the return of two starting offensive linemen will give Cam Newton more time to make plays in the passing game. Carolina is mired in a three-game losing streak entering Monday nights game at Philadelphia and is 1-5-1 in its last seven games. You can watch the game starting at 8:30pm ET/ 5:30pm PT on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5. Newton has struggled during the last three weeks, held to 527 yards passing and one touchdown with three interceptions during that span. Many of his throws are sailing high or wide or his intended target. Part of the issue is Newton has been under siege in the pocket, sacked 10 times in the last three games. The return of left tackle Byron Bell and left guard Amini Silatolu — who both practiced full on Thursday and arent listed on the teams injury report — should help an offence that ranks 26th in the league. Starting right guard Trai Turner is also improving, but may still be another week away. A lot of it is not just about him, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said of Newtons recent struggles. We can put it all on the quarterback and say its all about the quarterback, but this is a team game. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin has dropped a pass in the end zone in each of the last two games for Carolina (3-5-1). And Newton has gotten little help from his running backs, which have been hobbled by injuries all year. Playing behind an offensive line last Thursday night that included four undrafted players hasnt helped either. Rivera said earlier in the week if the Panthers are going to reach the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, theyll need to stay healthy on the offensive line the rest of the way. In order for us to make a run. ... weve got to have some groups have some continuity, the (offensive line) being one of them, Rivera said. Its a group thats been up and down because of the injuries. Newton did some self-scouting during in five days off players had since last Thursday nights loss to New Orleans and said he needs to get better, too. I think were at that point right now that everybody understands whats at stake, Newton said Wednesday. Every week is a must-win for us. Mark Sanchez, who is filling in for the injured Nick Foles for the Eagles at quarterback, can relate to what Newton is going through.dddddddddddd He struggled in New York and wound up getting cut by the Jets. Sanchez said Newton will be just fine if he continues to trust the coaches and his preparation and not let outside distractions get to him. Hes a heckuva player, a physical specimen with incredible talent, Sanchez said. Hes one of those guys that you play against and its like, Dang, man. The guy is a stud. So he has to understand that hes one of heckuva player and to never change no matter what. When things arent looking so good from the outside just put your head down and keep working and studying and trust his ability. Eagles coach Chip Kelly is pretty confident Newton will bounce back, too — he just hopes it isnt Monday night. He knows all about Newtons potential. Newton led Auburn to a 22-19 win over Kellys Oregon Ducks in the 2011 BCS national championship, throwing for 265 yards and two touchdowns and running for 64 yards on 22 carries. Kelly called 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton the complete package at quarterback. I remember just watching him in pregame warmups and thinking, holy smokes this guy is a legitimate quarterback, Kelly said. He can throw it. Obviously he broke Peyton Mannings rookie (yards passing) record. He can make all the throws and then, unfortunately, if you defend all the throws he has the ability to pull it down and run. He can run around people, he can run through people. Hes built like an NBA power forward. Newtons future appeared on the rise entering this season after leading the Panthers to the NFC South championship. But after a 12-4 season, Newtons overall record as a starter has fallen to 27-28-1. Hes been hobbled by rib and ankle injuries and hes completing just 57 per cent of his passes this year with only eight touchdowns in eight starts and five interceptions. I just want to win, whether I play good, bad or indifferent, Newton said. . We are past due for a game that proves we are what we thought we were. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

The St. Louis Blues, having added Ryan Miller and Steve Ott from Buffalo, remain the No.1-ranked team in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins. Among the team moving up since the last update, the Los Angeles Kings have won four straight and jump from 12 to eight. The New Jersey Devils are up, from 18 to 13, though they keep going back to goaltender Martin Brodeur, decisions that incrementally undermind their efforts to reach the postseason. The Minnesota Wild, getting healthier and with only one loss in the past nine games, are up from 20 to 15 and the Washington Capitals, who had a four-game winning streak snapped Sunday, climb from 25 to 21. Heading the wrong way, the Phoenix Coyotes have one win in the past six games and are down from 13 to 19, while the Toronto Maple Leafs slip from 15 to 20 after back-to-back OT losses coming out of the break. Detroit, now minus Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, drops from 21 to 24, and the Carolina Hurricanes, who have lost five in a row, are down from 19 to 25. Among the rest of the Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens remain the highest-ranked, at nine. The Winnipeg Jets are up three, from 17 to 14, and the Vancouver Canucks inch up from 23 to 22, simply because they are healthier than they were going into the Olympic break. The Ottawa Senators are up a spot, from 24 to 23, the Edmonton Oilers stay put at 26 and the Calgary Flames are up one, from 28 to 27. The Bruins bury the Red Wings, Pittsburgh controls play against Columbus, Colorados amazing comeback and the Kings stay alive; Scott Cullen has notes on Krug, Hamilton, Nyquist, Crosby, MacKinnon, Quick and more. BRUINS FINISH RED WINGS The Boston Bruins calmly dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, with a 4-2 win Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their first-round series in five games. While the series was short, it was relatively competitive but, in the end, the Bruins simply had too much. In Game Five, the Red Wings had a goal and an assist each from Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg -- and contributions from their superstars may have been their best chance for the upset -- but it wasnt enough. Boston got a goal and an assist from LW Milan Lucic and two assist from D Torey Krug on their way to the second round. The tough part for the Red Wings is that they couldnt get any production out of the young forwards that had played such vital roles this season. LW Tomas Tatar, C Riley Sheahan and RW Gustav Nyquist were held off the scoresheet in all five games and the tendency might be to think that these inexperienced forwards were overmatched in the moment, but they were Detroits best puck possession trio in the series, all three on for better than 58% of shot attempts at 5-on-5. Yet, there was ultimately some dissatisfaction from the Wings, who needed goals, not possession. In the series-deciding game, which Detroit trailed for 42 minutes, Nyquist played only 11:55, a threshold he surpassed in 44 of the previous 45 games. Detroits uphill battle was made steeper by the fact that G Jimmy Howard missed the last two games with a suspected concussion. Jonas Gustavsson actually played well, stopping 66 of 72 shots (.917), but its tough to upend the Bruins with a second-string goaltender. Datsyuk, playing on a bad knee, finished with five points in five games and was the only Red Wing with more than two points in the series. The Bruins emerged from the series, relatively easily, even though David Krejcis line struggled in possession terms. It certainly didnt hurt to have G Tuukka Rask at the top of his game, stopping 146 of 152 shots (.961) in the series. C Patrice Bergeron and Krug tied for the Bruins team lead with five points in the series. Lucic, RW Jarome Iginla and D Dougie Hamilton each had four points. That the Bruins young defencemen were able to contribute offensively proved to be a real advantage. The series win sets up Boston for a matchup with their rivals from Montreal. The top-seeded Bruins will be favoured, but the head-to-head matchups with the Canadiens have been tumultuous, dramatic affairs (well, forever, but also) in recent seasons, so it should be a fascinating battle. PENGUINS TAKE SERIES LEAD Perhaps feeling a little threatened, with the series tied 2-2, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out firing in Game Five and dominated play on their way to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The margin could have been much if not for the play of Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced. As the Penguins made a concerted effort to play Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin together on the top line, it turned out that Pittsburghs best possession numbers came from the second and third lines. Lee Stempniak, Brandon Sutter, Jussi Jokinen and Beau Bennett were each on the ice for more than 70% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Pittsburghs depth was also boosted by the presence of C Marcel Goc, who played 10:34 in his first game since suffering an ankle injury March 27. The possession domination for Pittsburgh, naturally, had a counter in Columbus, where Jack Skille, R.J. Umberger, Nick Foligno and Artem Anisimov were each below 30%. Penguins D Brooks Orpik missed the game with an undisclosed injury, giving Robert Bortuzzo an opportunity to play his first NHL playoff game and Bortuzzo didnt hurt the Penguins in 13:36 of ice time. While there has been criticism of Sidney Crosby for his play in this series, it needs to be said that his play is probably better than fine. After 11 individual shot attempts, and one assist, in Game Five, Crosby has five points and a in five games and has been on the ice for 60.1% of the shot attempts during 5-on-5 play. His LW, Chris Kunitz, had a goal and an assist, with seven shots on goal and six hits, in Game Five. This hasnt been an easy series for the Penguins, by any stretch, and theyre still trying to do it with the second-best goaltender in the series, but their skill advantage has been enough to give them the lead in the series. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY Trailing 2-1 into the third period of Game Five, the Minnesota Wild scored twice in the first 6:25 of the third period to take the lead and appeared on their way to taking the game, before the Avalanche scored with 1:14 remaining to tie it, then finished matters 3:27 into overtime. In the end, the 4-3 overtime win gave the Avalanche a 3-2 series lead.   The winning goal was authored by Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, giving him a playoff-leading 10 points thus far. Hes three points away from Jaromir Jagrs scoring record for an 18-year-old rookie in the postseason. MacKinnon played 21:56 in Game Five, second among Colorado forwards, behind only Paul Stastny (22:38); MacKinnon, who averaged 17:21 of ice time per game during the regular season, has played more than 21 minutes in four of five games in the series. The sequence leading up to the game-tying goal was contentious. There was an apparent holding penalty that was ignored in Colorados defensive zone, with the net empty, and then the Avalanche appeared to be offside seconds before PA Parenteau buried the tying goal. This is what is known as "getting the breaks." Avalanche LW Cody McLeod scored a goal, but was obliterated at even-strength, on for two shot attempts for and 17 against (10.5%). With McLeod off the ice, the Avalanche had 56.2% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. For the Wild, LW Matt Moulson, C Mikko Koivu and D Marco Scandella were on the ice for at least two-thirds of the shot attempts at 5-on-5, though Scandella was unfortunate enough to get beaten by McKinnon on the winning goal. Its been a close series to this point, though the Wild have held the possession edge, and it shifts back to Minnesota for Game Six. Colorado may get a boost with C Matt Duchene nearing a return to the lineup. If Duchene is ready to go, that ought to help Colorados cause. KINGS KEEP ON KEEPING ON Facing elimination for the second time in the series, the Los Angeles Kings stormed into San Jose Saturday night and outplayed the Sharks from the get-go, building a 3-0 lead 22 seconds into the second period before chilling out and taking that lead to games end. The Kings had outshot the Sharks 19-6 by the time they had taken that 3-0 lead, chasing Sharks G Antti Niemi.   Not only did the Sharks lose the game, but also lost D Marc-Edouard Vlasic was hurt (upper-body injury) on a run-in with Kings C Jarret Stoll. It cost Stoll two minutes for roughing, but Vlasic did not return. If hes not able to play in Game Six, thats a huge blow to the Sharks.. Kings RW Justin Williams had a game-high seven shots on goal (11 shot attempts), leading the Kings on ice for 73.1% of shot attempts. Kings G Jonathan Quick stopped all 30 shots sent in his direction, a decided improvement after some rough games earlier in the series. While the Kings are trying to make the unlikeliest of comebacks, from being down 3-0, if they manage to get good goaltending from Quick, maybe its possible.   Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. TORONTO - While Ottawa Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins has entertained some offers for his first overall pick in the CFL draft, he says theres a "relatively good chance" hell make the pick Tuesday night. "There has been some (interest) but not a whole lot," Desjardins said Monday. Desjardins says he knows who he wants to take first overall but is keeping it to himself. One player the Redblacks wont use the top pick on is McGill tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the top-ranked CIS prospect for the draft who was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday by the Kansas City Chiefs. "As much as he wouldve been a guy that we probably wouldve selected, now that he has a commitment from an NFL team theres no reason for us to go in that direction," Desjardins said. The popular sentiment is if Desjardins keeps the No. 1 pick, hell use it on Laval centre Pierre Lavertu. The six-foot-three, 300-pound Lavertu finished third in the CFL scouting bureaus season-ending top-15 rankings, and while he might not have the most upside and potential, Lavertu is generally regarded as one of the most pro-ready prospects in the draft. Drafting Lavertu first overall would address a need for Ottawa after the off-season retirement of veteran Marwan Hage, whom the Redblacks selected in the CFL expansion draft in December from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. "Offensive line is a need, no doubt," Desjardins said. "But that doesnt necessarily mean 100 per cent thats what well do. "Theres a good chance but everybody talks about a certain number of guys, whether its those two or three other top prospects. Just because theyre being written about and spoken about that doesnt mean we have them graded the same way." For the first time ever, the CFL draft will be held at night, with the first round broadcast live on TSN. That could give teams more time to talk trade with Desjardins, although the Redblacks GM isnt anticipating a lot of last-minute offers. "Maybe a little bit but I wouldnt think that dynamic would change," he said. Toronto Argonauts GM Jim Barker said the extra time could prompt some action. "Im sure from early in the morning there will be people calling and youll sit there and probably want to do something," he said. "It will make for a long day . . . but I think its kind of cool were doing it in the evening." If the Redblacks are coveting Lavertu, they might be well advised to take him with the early selection because the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who have the No. 2 selection, are said to be very interested in the Laval centre. So much so that if Ottawa does take Lavertu first overall, the Bombers would then reportedly be willing to deal the second pick to acquire some assets while moving down in the first round and selecting a player who could still help them. A potential trade partner could be the B.C. Lions, who are said to like Simon Fraser centre Matthias Goossen, the CFL scouting bureaus fifth-ranked prospect. Barker says Lavertu and Goossen are definite players of interest. "I think theres a lot of teams in this league looking for a centre . . . and theres a couple of them, he (Lavertu) and Goossen," Barker said. "Those are guys who are being looked at by all the teams. "I wouldnt say he (Lavertu) is the top prospect, hes one of the top prospects, theres no doubt about that. Hes a tough guy coming out of a good program." Hamilton could be another team on the lookout for a centre after losing Hage in the expansion draft. But the Ticats, who have the final first-round pick at No. 9 overall, would have to deal with either Ottawa or Winnipeg to be assured a shot at either Lavertu or Goossen. All nine teams will make first-round selections Tuesday night. The Edmonton Eskimos will select third overall, followed by the Montreal Alouettes. B.C. is at No. 5, with Toronto, the Calgary Stampeders and Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders selecting before Hamilton completes the opening round. Another offensive lineman expected to go early in the first round is Montreal tackle David Foucault. The towering six-foot-eight, 300-pound Foucault finished behind Duvernay-Tardif in the final top-15 list and although hell attend the Carolina Panthers mini camp this week, it wont be with the security of having signed an NFL contract. What makes Foucault a top prospect is much more than just his sheer size. Many CFL scouts believe he has the potential to develop into a dominant left tackle, a key spot on any offensive line. Should Edmonton pass on Foucault, its very likely Montreal will take him with the fourth selection. Another first-round prospect is Concordia Stingers defensive lineman Quinn Smith, who finished ranked fourth on the top-15 list following an impressive showing at the CFL combine. The six-foot-two, 305-pound Toronto native was solid on both sides of the football. Last week, Smith announced he had tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol prior the combine. If Smiths B sample also tests positive, hell receive a two-year ban from the CIS, thus ending his college career. But in the CFL, Smith would be deemed a first-time offender of its drug policy and be subjected to mandatory testing and an assessment, followed by counselling. A second offence would trigger a three-game suspension. The agreement also calls for a one-year ban for a third offence and a lifetime suspension for a fourth. Gene Garber Jersey . Its not yet Week 12 and this years six playoff teams are already all but determined thanks to the dreadful first halves of both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos (and you could argue the playoff seeds were clinched long before now). What remains are the battles for home field advantage throughout the playoffs, still very much up for grabs in both the West and East Division. First place in the West should be hotly contested down the stretch between the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders – with the BC Lions hanging around and hoping to strike as well – while in the East everything is still up for grabs. The Toronto Argonauts currently hold first in the division with a 6-4 mark through 10 games, followed closely by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 5-5 and the 4-6 Montreal Alouettes. Will it stay that way the rest of the season? The Argos hope to preserve the lead in the East, or at the very least stay within striking distance of it, until Ricky Ray returns from a shoulder injury in five weeks and they make their final push for the top spot. With impressive sophomore Zach Collaros filling in, that scenario seems entirely possible. Collaros has thrown for more than 1,200 yards and seven TDs in eight appearances (three starts) this season but theres no question the Double Blue are at their best when Ray is under centre. Prior to his injury, the 33-year-old veteran was playing like a bona fide Most Outstanding Player candidate and if he returns playing at that same high level, will give Toronto a solid chance at a first-round playoff bye. The next two games will be a test for the Argos as they visit both the Roughriders and Stampeders, but it gets a little easier than that with three of their final six against the Eskimos and Blue Bombers. Working against Torontos favour however, both the Tiger-Cats and Alouettes have looked like different teams after their early season struggles. Hamilton started the year at 1-4 before fighting back to .500 with a modest win streak against the Blue Bombers and Eskimos. But its been their last two performances, a series split with the Lions, that has teams more convinced the Black and Gold are to be taken seriously as contenders in the second half. With Henry Burris under centre the Ticats offence has always been one of the leagues best; what was encouraging for fans in Hamilton was the dominant play of the teams defence, routinely their weakness, in the Week 11 win over the Lions. The Alouettes meanwhile, have been a better team under GM and interim head coach Jim Popp. Montreal started the season 2-3 under now fired head coach Dan Hawkins, and while theyve only just matched that record in five games with Popp, signs of improvement – and the team looking like their old selves – are starting to show. Not having Anthony Calvillo for at least the next eight games hurts however. (Calvillo, still recovering from a concussion suffered in mid-August, was placed on the nine-game injury list last week.) That said, rookie Tanner Marsh, despite his ugly stat line through three appearances and two starts, has given the team a chance to win since taking over behind centre (they are 2-1 in games the xx has finished). The Ticats toughest games remaining on their schedule are dates with the Stampeders while Montreal still has the Lions and Roughriders on their schedule. The division winner will almost certainly be determined in the whopping six head to heads the three teams encounter down the stretch. The Argos face the Ticats twice more and the Alouettes once while Hamilton and Montreal still have all three of their meetings left to play, including a Touchdown Atlantic matchup two weeks from now. The Senators return from a lengthy layoff caused by Wednesdays attack on Parliament Hill to host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Penguins D Brooks Orpik missed the game with an undisclosed injury, giving Robert Bortuzzo an opportunity to play his first NHL playoff game and Bortuzzo didnt hhurt the Penguins in 13:36 of ice time.dddddddddddd While there has been criticism of Sidney Crosby for his play in this series, it needs to be said that his play is probably better than fine. UNIONDALE, N.Y. - This weekend version of New York, New York could cost the Columbus Blue Jackets the playoff spot they are desperate to grab. The Blue Jackets gave everything they had at home in a loss to the playoff-hopeful New York Rangers on Friday night and followed it up with a disheartening 2-0 defeat on Sunday to the New York Islanders, who are just playing out the string. "Its the NHL. The other team is paid to play, too," defenceman Jack Johnson said. "There is no easy teams. Nobody took them lightly, nobody didnt understand the gravity of the situation, we just didnt score a goal." Evgeni Nabokov made 41 saves in his 58th NHL shutout, and Travis Hamonic scored a coast-to-coast, power-play goal in the second period to pace the Islanders, who are third to last in the Eastern Conference. Columbus had a total of 24 shots in the first two periods and then fired 17 in a desperate final frame when the Blue Jackets had four of their six power plays. "If you cant come and push yourself every night, go do putt-putt or something," Johnson said. "Everyone tried. We knew how important this one was. I cant question anyones effort. It was just a tough game." The Blue Jackets power play has gone 0 for 35 the past nine games. They will have to get better over the final 11 games, starting with a key home matchup on Tuesday against Detroit, which is neck and neck with Columbus in the playoff race. Columbus, which has dropped to fifth in the Metropolitan Division, has fallen out of an Eastern Conference playoff position. The Blue Jackets have lost three of four. "These points are huge right now," centre Ryan Johansen said. "Against a team like the Islanders, who are playing spoiler right now, its very frustrating. Weve got to learn from it but we cant dwell on this." Nabokov got the best of Russian counterpart Sergei Bobrovsky in their third meeting this season and posted his third shutout in this campaign. It was just the Islanders second regulation win ever over the Blue Jackets. Cal Clutterbuck also scored for the Islanders, who bounced back from a 6-0 loss to Minnesota on Tuesday and finished a 2-2 homestand. "We were playing hard for our fans. We worked hard and we found a way to win," Nabokov said. "We knew they were playing a third game in four (days) and we wanted to make it tough for them." Bobrovsky made 30 saves before he was pulled for an extra skater with 1:50 left as Columbus began its final power play. "There is no time to rant and rave," forward Brandon Dubinsky said. "Weve got to be ready to go for our next game. "We certainly need to be a lot better than we were today." Hamonic gave the Islanders struggling power play a lift with a stunning, end-to-end rush up the middle of the ice that produced his second goal of the season with just 51.7 seconds left in the middle period. The defenceman started from behind his net and skated alone on a straight line toward the centre ice logo. He eluded R.J. Umberger in the neutral zone, carried the puck across the blue line and then snapped a shot from the slot over Bobrovskys left shoulder for his first goal since Oct. 29 — a span of 45 games. "I was glad to get that scoring chance and finish it," Hamonic said. "Nice to chip in offensively, but I work to bring a defence presence first. "I was just fortunate to get my feet moving and score." New York had two failed power plays earlier in the second. The first generated little as the Islanders couldnt get organized. The second produced several potential scoring chances, including a seemingly open net for Frans Nielsen to shoot at, but his drive from the right circle hit the outside of the net. The Islanders took a 1-0 lead when Clutterbuck scored his 10th goal just eight seconds after serving a roughing penalty. Johan Sundstrom, in his fourth career NHL game, swung behind the Columbus net and attempted to score on a wraparound at the left post. The puck caromed in front to Nielsen, who nudged it into the slot to Clutterbuck for a shot that beat Bobrovsky with 6:34 left in the first. It was the first career point for Sundstrom, who made his debut on March 14. PHOENIX -- Theyre former Yankees, clubhouse neighbours and, potentially, new platoon partners with the Milwaukee Brewers. That gaping hole at first base might be filled in 2014 by lefty Lyle Overbay and righty Mark Reynolds. Each player signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, meaning theyll have to prove themselves -- again -- to stick around. "Its really an uncomfortable feeling," said manager Ron Roenicke, drawing on his own experiences in the majors. "I like that theres competition but I tell you what its a nervous time. I dont have fond memories of spring training." This spring, its Overbay and Reynolds who will be trying to impress Roenicke. Reynolds, 30, has a feast-or-famine reputation with 202 homers in his seven seasons in the majors with a career .233 average. He has struck out at least 154 times in each season since 2008, including 223 strikeouts in 2009. But Roenicke sees some hope in the stats. Last year between the Indians and Yankees, Reynolds had 154 strikeouts with 51 walks, about a 3-to-1 ratio. "He sees pitches. He waits for the pitch he wants to hit," Roenicke said. "Hes not up there hacking at everything, and I think thats the difference." Its a little tough on Reynolds having to win a job going into his eight season in the majors. He is back in the National League though, where he came up with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007. "Honestly, I was just looking for the best place to get at bats. Come in and have a good spring and kind of prove myself all over again," Reynolds said. Reynolds isnt usually that far from Overbay. Theyve got lockers right next to each other in the clubhouse. On Wednesday, there they were sitting next to each other taking a brief break during a sunny afternoon in the dugout during batting practice. And there was Overbay yelling out to Reynolds across the usual morning clubhouse din to pass on a reminder that it was time for a meeting. Overbay, 37, is back in Milwaukee for the first time since the 2005 season. It was after that season that Overbay was traded to Toronto in a deal that opened up first base for Prince Fielder. Since then, there have been stops in Pittsburgh and Arizona before spending 2013 with the Yankees. Overbay hit .240, though he did have a renaissance of sorts with 14 homers and 59 RBIs, both highs for him since 2010. It was with the Yankees, with the aid of hitting coach Kevin Long, that Overbay said he got the lower half of his body on track with his swing for the first two-thirds of the season. Overbay said he got untracked again the last two months, so he wanted to focus this off-season on regaining what he lost. "Sometimes when results arent happening, you resort back to your other path," Overbay said Wednesday. "So those are the kinds of things I wanted to get in muscle memory, so that when I came here and I could it through this whole year." He might potentially be the best defensive first baseman on the Brewers roster. Overbay is also a solid clubhouse presence who appears comfortable with what he needs to do in the latter part of his career. No guarantees yet with the Brewers. Besides Reynolds, returning veteran Juan Francisco, along with younger or less heralded players like Hunter Morris and Sean Halton are also in the mix at first. But without taking a swing in a game, Overbay has made an impression Roenicke. "I like what he has to say out there. I like what some of the younger guys have already come to me and said about him, that doesnt happen that often," Roenicke said. "So hes a guy that were really happy to have in camp." The inclusion of the Arsenal midfielder in the initial squad despite an injury-ravaged season in which he made just three first-team appearances highlighted Hodgsons faith in Wilshere and he now seems set for a ticket to Euro 2016.Both of them [Wilshere and Jordan Henderson] are a little bit short of match fitness but certainly for Jack Wilshere the last couple of games shows that his lack of match fitness isnt very evident. I thought he was very good in the first half he played [against Australia], said Hodgson.Former England caretaker boss Peter Taylor is also adamant Wilshere should go to France. Speaking after the win over Turkey, he told Sky Sports News HQ: Wilshere is so different, such a clever player, he could play for Barcelona. Hes such a talented player. You want that type of different midfield player for your options, whether you start him or bring him on as sub. Id be wrapping him up in cotton wool.Marcus Rashford Marcus Rashford was congratulated by Hodgson on Friday Marcus Rashford was 3/1 to make Englands final 23 when the provisional squad was first named. Only Fabian Delph was more likely to be axed. But after a stunning introduction to international football - combined with injury concerns for Daniel Sturridge - the Manchester United teenager could be on his way to Euro 2016.It took the 18-year-old just three minutes to find the net against Australia and Hodgson was full of praise for the youngster after the game. What a debut. Im pleased for him, said the England boss. But I wasnt surprised with the way he played. He was always one of the players who was seriously competing for a place in the 23 and hes done his chances of travelling with us no harm. He wouldnt be out of place in anyones 23.Ross Barkley Ross Barkley was a second-half sub against Australia Ross Barkley enjoyed his most productive season with Everton in the Premier League in 2015/16, scoring eight times and registering the same number of assists. However, a drop-off in form towards the end of the campaign appears to have damaged his chances of a key role for England this summer and he was overlooked for a starting spot in either friendly.A raw talent, Barkley is likely to be an important figure for England in years to come and remaiins a likely traveller to France - if only as a squad member.dddddddddddd.  Andros Townsend Andros Townsend hopes to have made an impression Andros Townsend was out of the England reckoning in March but forced his way back into Hodgsons plans with an impressive run of form for Newcastle. However, after playing just 14 minutes across the two friendlies this month, his position in the camp is once again in doubt.Everyones desperate to go to a major tournament, he said after his run-out against Australia. What a huge honour it would be if I did, but Ive done what I can and now well see what the manager decides.Townsend is one of few genuine wingers in Hodgsons provisional squad and has enjoyed a number of fine performances in an England shirt under the manager. But he is likely to be one of the names debated by Hodgson and his coaching staff.Danny Drinkwater Danny Drinkwater played 90 minutes against Australia He may have been an integral part of Leicester Citys Premier League title win but Danny Drinkwater is among the three favourites to be cut from Hodgsons group of 26. The central midfielder was subbed on for the final 17 minutes against Turkey but played the full 90 against Australia. With Eric Dier, Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson vying for a similar role in the team, he could be the unfortunate one to miss out. Dier seems set for a starting spot, while Wilshere has been praised by Hodgson, who also dismissed concerns over Hendersons fitness problems.Daniel Sturridge Daniel Sturridge has missed both friendlies with injury Daniel Sturridge was Englands first-choice striker at the World Cup but injuries have limited the Liverpool mans playing time over the past two seasons and, despite returning for the Reds run-in, a calf problem kept him out of both international friendlies this month. The forward is due to return to training on Sunday and Hodgson has told the press his injury problem isnt likely to affect his ability to play in Englands Euro 2016 opener against Russia on June 10. However, the manager also stopped short of backing Sturridge for a place in the squad. It seems the 26-year-olds tournament chances remain up for discussion.Fabian Delph Fabian Delph is all but out of contention for a place in the final squad Manchester Citys Fabian Delph was a surprise inclusion in Hodgsons provisional squad of 26, given his injury problems and struggles to break into Manuel Pellegrinis plans this season. Now, a groin injury has effectively ruled him out of contention for a place on the plane. The midfielder was unable to travel to Sunderland for Fridays friendly with Australia and Hodgson said: That means probably he wont be with us either in the final 23, unless, of course, we have injuries. Ive put him on a standby list and he understands and accepts that. KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Sporting Kansas City acquired midfielder Jimmy Medranda from Colombias Deportivo Pereira on Thursday for an undisclosed transfer fee and signed him to a multi-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Medranda will join the defending MLS champions in time for the Disney Pro Soccer Classic and occupy one of their international roster spots. Medranda, who turned 20 last week, joined Sporting KC on loan last August and made his MLS debut in September. He was the youngest player to appear for the club during its title run. The addition of Medranda means that Sporting KC returns 26 of the 28 players under contract from its championship roster. That includes 96 per cent of field minutes played last season. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Phil Mickelson flew to Georgia to see a specialist about the pain in his lower back, hopeful of defending his title in the Phoenix Open. Mickelson, who first felt soreness in his back while in Abu Dhabi, withdrew after making the 36-hole cut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. He said he did not want to risk getting into bad habits by compensating for the pain. Mickelson met with Tom Boers, who told him his facet joints had locked up. "Tom restored my mobility, but I still have inflammation that will take a week or two to subside," Mickelson said in a statement. Mickelson nearly shot a 59 in the opening round at the TPC Scottsdale last year and went on to a wire-to-wire win. He graduated from Arizona State and once lived in Scottsdale. He plans to fly to Arizona on Wednesday with the intention of playing. "If it was any other tournament Id skip it," Mickelson said. "But Im defending, its my second hometown and I love the event. Ill have a light practice session and if it goes well, I may try to play." Mickelson was scheduled to play the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am the following week, where he is a five-time champion. He is not playing Riviera or the Match Play Championship because his oldest daughter is in the ninth grade at a new school and has spring break one week earlier than Mickelsons other two children. If he were to miss these two weeks, that would mean Mickelson played only 36 holes on the West Coast Swing, where he has won 19 of his 42 events on the PGA Tour. "Im itching to play," he said. "But I have to look at the big picture. I have a number of tournaments I want to play and play well this year, including the majors, so I have to be realistic about how I feel in the short term." On Thursday, half the U.S. Senate urged National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell to change the Washington clubs name, saying it is a racist slur and it is time to replace it. The franchise responded by releasing Allens letter. "Our use of Redskins as the name of our football team for more than 80 years has always been respectful of and shown reverence toward the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans," he wrote. The letter references research that "the term Redskins originated as a Native American expression of solidarity." It notes that the teams logo was designed by Native American leaders and cites surveys that Native Americans and Americans as a whole support the name. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups. Last month, Reid took to the Senate floor to say Snyder should "do what is morally right" and change the name. In a letter Thursday, 49 senators mentioned the National Basketball Associations quick action recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers oowner Donald Sterling for life after he was heard on an audio recording making offensive comments about blacks.dddddddddddd They said Goodell should formally push to rename the Redskins. "We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," read the letter, which did not use the word "Redskins." Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida wrote his own letter saying he doesnt believe that retaining the Redskin name "is appropriate in this day and age." In a written response Thursday, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said "the intent of the teams name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image." Reid and Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington state led the letter-writing effort. All senators on the letter are Democrats. Cantwell spokesman Jared Leopold said Republicans were not asked to participate. The senators noted that tribal organizations representing more than two million Native Americans across the U.S. have said they want the Redskins name dropped. Despite federal laws protecting their identity, "Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C., football team mocks their culture," they wrote. "The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur." ' ' '

MONTREAL -- Montreal Impact scoring star Marco Di Vaio says he may retire at the end of the season. The 37-year-old striker said Wednesday that he wants to play another season in Montreal, but that family concerns may cause him to hang up his boots. He said his wife and two children have returned to Italy and he wants to be with them. "If my family was here it would be different, Id play another year for sure," he said. He recently took a brief trip to Italy to attend to an illness in his family. Reports in Italy said Di Vaio is expected to join his former club Bologna in an executive job after the Major League Soccer season. The Rome native leads MLS with 17 goals. He was named player of the week for his two goals in a 4-2 victory at New England on Saturday. Algeria enters the match riding a wave of unexpected confidence after pummeling South Korea, 4-2, in Porto Alegre on Sunday. The Desert Foxes opened the scoring after 26 minutes as Carl Medjani sent a long ball over the top to the feet of striker Islam Slimani, who did well to split two South Korean defenders and touch it past goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong. Two minutes later the Algerians doubled their advantage when Abdelmoumene Djabou served a perfect corner kick into the penalty area where Halliche got to the ball ahead of an out-of-position Jung and nodded it home with pace. Djabou then made it 3-0 for Algeria seven minutes before the intermission when he found himself alone in the box to accept a square ball from Slimani and slide it home for a three-goal halftime lead. South Korea got back into the match five minutes into the second half when Son Heung-Min collected a long pass from Ki Sung-Yueng, turned and beat Algeria goalkeeper Rais MBolhi through the legs. But Algeria regained the three goal lead in the 62nd minute as Sofiane Feghouli and Yacine Brahimi worked a nice one-two on the edge of the penalty area to send Brahimi through on goal and he finished by ripping a strike under Jung. Again South Korea pulled one back through Koo Ja-Cheol, but it wasnt enough as the Desert Foxes held on for the win. Vahid Halilhodzics side can advance to the round of 16 on Thursday with at least a draw. "I woulld like to dedicate this victory to the fans who were here and the Algerian people back home who have waited a long time for this victory.dddddddddddd It means a lot to us all," Halilhodzic said."Today the team played to its strengths. I told the players to keep it tight for the first 15 minutes and I felt that did extremely well and effectively in the first half - it was almost perfect. We slowed a little during the second half, why Im not sure. Now we have to try to get a good result against Russia and qualify for the round of 16. Anything is possible." Russia, meanwhile, faces an uphill climb to reach the knockout round following their 1-0 loss to Belgium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The first 80 minutes of the match produced little in the way of offensive output for either side, but Divock Origi gave the match its one moment of quality two minutes from time to hand Belgium its second win in as many games. Chelsea star Eden Hazard set the scoring play in motion when he ook possession of the ball on the left wing and dribbled to the end line, where he pulled a pass back to Origi, who struck it first-time into the roof of the net past goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. Russia needs to win to have any chance of advancing. A one-goal win for Russia means that South Korea would have to beat Belgium by three, while a two-goal margin for Russia makes them a near lock to advance. Anything less than a win, however, and Fabio Capellos team will be eliminated. "I still believe we have a chance, but we now have no choice but to beat Algeria," said Capello. "Today we went out to win the match, but we got caught on the counter-attack - its as simple as that." ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- With wads of money to spend, the Cleveland Browns didnt waste any time shoving millions into two defensive holes they created this winter. During the furious first few hours of free agency Tuesday, the team agreed to terms with strong safety Donte Whitner, a Cleveland native who cant wait to play in his hometown. "I must now embark on my intended journey and become a Cleveland Brown," Whitner wrote on his Twitter account. "A place thats very dear to my heart!" Also, the Browns reportedly struck a deal with inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, who resurrected his career last season in his second stint with Arizona. The team has not made any announcements. With $49 million of space under the salary cap to sign players, new Cleveland general manager Ray Farmer addressed two pressing needs after the club decided not to re-sign safety T.J. Ward or linebacker DQwell Jackson -- the Browns top tacklers last season and two of their best players. Whitners deal is reportedly worth $28 million over four years, and Dansbys is for $24 million -- $14 million guaranteed -- over four years. Farmer could be working on a blockbuster deal, with the Browns said to be interested in trading with Tampa Bay for shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis. If they can land Revis and pair him with Pro Bowler Joe Haden, the Browns would have arguably the NFLs best tandem of cornerbacks. The Buccaneers are eager to part with Revis, who makes $16 million a year. Revis has a previous relationship with Browns coach Mike Pettine, who coached him in New York. The Browns didnt ignore their offence on the first day of free agency, signing Cincinnati wide receiver Andrew Hawkins, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet. The Bengals have five days to match the contract or Hawkins will join the Browns, who need a replacement at slot receiver after releasing troubled veteran Davone Bess. A two-time Pro Bowler, Whitner is returning to Cleveland to help turn around a franchise he pulled for as a kid. As word of his signing leaked out shortly after 4 p.m., Whitner, who played at Ohio State before he was drafted by Buffalo, tweeted "O-H" in a nod to both his alma mater and home state. After playing 14 seasons in Cleveland, 49ers kicker Phil Dawson can appreciate Whitners excitement about the homecoming. "If most guys are honest, they have a soft spot in their hearts for their hometown, and obviously Dontes getting to go home," Dawson said on a conference call after receiving a new two-year deal with San Francisco. "One thing I know about Cleveland is when you grow up there, you wear orange and brown. No matter where you go or how far youve been gone, if youve grown up in Cleveland, youre a Browns fan. "Im sure its a special opportunity for Donte. Obviously were going to miss him. Hes a great player. Hell be a huge addition to that organization." Whitner spent five seasons with the Bills, who selected him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2006. Nicknamed "Hitner," the 28-year-old signed a three-year, $11.75 million free-agent deal with San Francisco in 2011 and played three seasons with the 49ers, getting to the NFC championship each year. Hes been durable, missing just one game in the past four seasons. Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer, another proud Clevelander, is thrilled to have Whitner as a new teammate. "Great to have another hometown guy here to help us win! Congrats @DonteWhitner!" Hoyer posted on his Twitter account. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Dansby fills the void left by the surprising departure of Jackson, the respected captain and team leader. Dansby, 32, had 122 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks and four interceptions with the Cardinals last season. He spent his first six years with Arizona, signed with Miami for three and then returned to the Cardinals as a free agent in 2013. A speedster who played collegiately at Toledo, Hawkins worked out for Cleveland in 2008 before he signed in the Canadian Football League. The 28-year-old signed with the Bengals in 2011 and had a career-high 51 receptions for 533 yards and four touchdowns in 2012. He was limited to eight games last season because of an ankle injury. "The trend is for teams to play positively and do everything to win a game rather than merely not lose," FIFAs panel of coaching experts working in Brazil reported Friday. The best teams were rewarded for being "not afraid of losing their shape for brief moments," the 284-page document noted. "Outstanding fast transitions and counterattacking tactics," were praised as the most effective strategy at a World Cup which equaled the tournament record for most goals and was widely praised as the best in a generation. It was a different story four years ago. Then, the football was so poor in South Africa that FIFA President Sepp Blatter asked a task force to suggest ways of making football more entertaining. Though that panel achieved little, in Brazil the teams, coaches and players rose to their challenge. "The tempo of the game was impressive -- Brazil 2014 was one of, if not the fastest World Cups ever played," the FIFA technical report said. Other successful trends in Brazil included playing with at least two strikers, three central defenders and only one defensive midfielder. Controversial incidents -- including Uruguay forward Luis Suarez biting an opponent, and players continuing despite apparent head injuries -- are not mentioned in the document. Teams are also rarely criticized, though Brazil is not spared after being outplayed by eventual winner Germany and the Netherlands. "An incomprehensibly poor performance against Germany," the report said of the host nations semifinal humbling, adding that 7-1 was "a fair reflection of the strengths of the two teams." FIFAs coaches noted Brazils "attacking game not quite clicking into gear and some co-ordination problems obvious in defence." Tactically, the FIFA report says top teams no longer use two holding midfielders, which was effective in South Africa. A lone striker is also out of fashion. "Most teams played with two strikers (if not three), and the few teams that played with one lone attacker left the competition early," the report said. Goalkeepers like Germanys Manuel Neuer now functionn as an extra outfield player, and specialized coaching should reflect that, the report said.dddddddddddd The report suggests playing with three central defenders is "on the rise again" thanks to the third-place Netherlands, surprise quarterfinalist Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay. Four years after Spain rode its tiki-taka passing to win the World Cup, the report notes effective use of the ball is now more important than simply having it. In Brazil, 21 of 64 matches were won by the counterattacking team having less possession. "Possession play must be efficient and not sterile," the report noted, adding that 34 of 171 goals in Brazil came from "quick transition play." "Counter-attacking tactics were once a tool in a teams armoury, but now some teams base their entire play around such tactics," the report said. More goals than expected came from corner kicks and "remarkable" high-quality crosses, and early leads were often overturned. "Teams that scored the first goal were at times too confident and too sure of themselves," the report said. Defensive tactics included aggressive pressing to get the ball in the first 15 minutes, and holding a back line at least 40 metres from goal. "Teams defended in a compact block in a high line and overloaded the area where the ball was," the report said. Costa Rica and Algeria are praised for making progress, and so was the CONCACAF region which also had Mexico and the United States reach the second round "Good development work has seen the gap between (CONCACAF) teams narrow, which automatically means that there is healthy competition and an improved standard of football," the report states. "Europe can be more than happy with their performance at Brazil 2014," the report said, after winning for the first time in the Americas. The four winless Asian confederation teams "lacked creativity, ideas, penetration and players who could turn a match in their favour." FIFAs experts also hope the World Cup will encourage a generation of unselfish players putting their team first. "Individual skill can only be effective if it is fully in sync with the efforts and philosophy of the team." ' ' '

FIVE QUICK HOOPS THOUGHTS 1. CARMELO ANTHONY: As Knicks fans worry about the potential departure with his decision to opt out, I see this as a blessing in disguise.  As currently constructed, the Knicks have NO shot at being a legitimate contender. Yes. The organization gave up a kings ransom to get a major Asset yet when you reflect on his time in NY hes been a terrific scoring talent and theyve had their share of ups and downs and in his defense - not all his fault. He is what he is at this stage of his career -- a brilliant scorer who plays very hard on the offensive end of the court. In the end, sometimes in sports, business and life the best strategy is to cut your losses and move on. With Tyson Chandler, Amare Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani all off the books next season, it allows president Phil Jackson to shape the organization in his image which is the right move. The key is to avoid all the noise from the NY media with demands to go for Big Name $$ Quick Fixes and make thoughtful basketball decisions. This organization tries too often to Win the Back Page rather than do whats smart. Yes, a terrific talent could walk out the door for little or nothing yet in 12 months you get to truly build the right foundation for long term success. Good common sense. 2. CHICAGO BULLS: Youll hear their name lots in the next 10 days when Melos name comes up and if I were Melo this makes complete sense to me as long as hes willing to take a pay cut that he can earn some back in quality endorsements if hes a significant piece on a major-league winning team in Chicago. Against the Knicks, a quick comparison: Money: NY, ownership: Chicago…. not close, management: Chicago…. Sorry, but Phil Jackson has never been a president/GM, coach: Chicago…. not close, team talent level: Chicago. If Derrick Rose can even get back to being 80 per cent of what he was, this is a nice edge.   In my mind, the Bulls make the most sense if -- and its a big IF -- hes willing to sacrifice. Hell be held totally accountable here on a daily basis. No nonsense.  Defining moment for him in his career. 3. KEVIN LOVE: Where there is smoke ….  If Im the TWolves, I move him as soon as I can and get on with the business of reshaping my team while his value is at its highest. Many folks say wait until the trade deadline, yet Im not sure youll get better than the next few weeks. I think you owe it to yourself and your fans to cut the cord as soon as you can. Believe me; if they really want him, theyll blink and offer you close (not all) of what you want. Be proactive. In 12 months, hell be out the door. Deal with it and rid yourself of the drama.  Terrific talent, yet hes got you to how many playoff appearances? Sure, the other 14 teammates matter a whole lot in the Western Conference but its time to be realistic and based upon your market build a team rather than the concern with having name guys. 4. ZACH RANDOLPH (Grizzlies): Trying to get an extension worked out in Memphis. Makes perfect sense to me.  All the guy does is produce and hes done it in the context of winning/playoffs. A double-double machine who is one of the toughest covers in the league, hes been very good for you. A piece you cant lose. If the term and money make sense, do it. 5. JOEL EMBIID: Feel awful for this young man. Watching him play this year at the University of Kansas hes an intriguing talent with loads of major potential that I love.  On the other hand, with some teams freaked out by the injuries to bigs like Sam Bowie and Greg Oden over the years with the complete - and I mean complete - change in the way the NBA game is played on the perimeter it might benefit him to fall a bit to a team that will be patient with him and allow him to work his way in at the right pace as a rookie. Hes got a chance to be very good, yet in a different league that bigs came into 20 years ago. If he drops a bit, someones going to be quite lucky if he holds up physically.  Risk vs. Reward.  Can change in a very positive way or end some careers with this pick. Will be interesting to watch unfold. Cuttino Mobley Jersey . Hi Kerry, Im sure youve received many emails wondering what your take is on the Spezza goal that looked like Neil blatantly kicked it in while standing directly in the middle of the crease where, you know, usually a goalie is to make a save but couldnt be due to Neil being there! Thanks! Jon - Westfield, MA Jon:  Lets first ask Henrik Lundqvist what he thought of the scoring of the Sens second goal with . James Harden Jersey . Messis 75th-minute goal answered some of the criticism the clubs all-time leading scorer had received for his lacklustre performances in the teams recent losses in the league, Champions League and Copa del Rey final.MINNEAPOLIS -- Matt Cassel was polished. Teddy Bridgewater was poised. The Minnesota Vikings have yet to pick a starting quarterback, but their passing game has sure been productive in the preseason. Bridgewater gave the giddy fans chanting his first name a pair of go-ahead touchdown throws to cheer for in the fourth quarter, propelling the Vikings past the Arizona Cardinals 30-28 on Saturday night. Wide receiver Greg Jennings shouted, "Teddys world!" as he walked out of the locker room. "Its not. Im still the young guy here. I still have a lot to prove," Bridgewater said. Cassel has taken the majority of the turns with the first-team offence, and the veteran has done nothing but solidify his status. Coach Mike Zimmer said he hasnt reached the date hes had in mind for a decision. Bridgewater at least gave him more to think about with his second-half performance, albeit against backups and guys bound to be cut in a couple of weeks. "Im very pleased. Im just going to continue to try and get better from here," said Bridgewater, who finished 16 for 20 for 177 yards, much better than his debut. Less than a minute after the Cardinals had gone ahead on a bizarre fourth-down score off a loose ball, Bridgewater floated a back-shoulder fade pass from 2 yards to Rodney Smith with 18 seconds remaining for the lead. "Teddy was calm. He was smart. That whole series was a lot of blitzes," Zimmer said. On that final drive, Bridgewater completed six of seven passes for 77 yards. "I give Teddy a lot of credit. He was impressive. It was a very nice drive he put together," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. Bridgewater found Allen Reisner for a short touchdown and Jarius Wright for the 2-point conversion with 7:57 left, giving the Vikings a 24-21 edge. "He does it every day in practice. I wasnt surprised at all. He always puts the ball on the money," Smith said. Kyle Rudolph had four catches for 89 yards and a scoring toss from Cassel as the Vikings kept their first team in for the whole first half, and Bridgewater and the backups picked up where they left off. Ryan Lindley, who played the whole second half at quaarterback for the Cardinals, threw three straight incompletions after a 33-yard pass interference penalty on Derek Cox put the ball at the 6.dddddddddddd Lindley dropped the fourth-and-goal shotgun snap, and in the scrap for the ball, centre John Estes got down on his knees and batted it behind him. Zach Bauman scooped it up and ran in for the score with 1:11 remaining. The ruling was that because there was no possession by Lindley, advancement was allowable. "I saw a play I hadnt seen in 22 years, that touchdown," Arians said, deadpanning. "It was designed." For the first time since training camp started, the Cardinals actually breathed some fresh air while they tuned up for the regular season. After playing their exhibition opener and holding every practice inside at their covered home stadium just outside of sultry Phoenix, they finally left the air conditioning. The temperature at kickoff was 85 degrees, steamy for Minnesota, but practically a cold front for the Arizona desert in August. Drew Stanton threw a scoring pass to basketball-player-turned-tight-end Darren Fells for the Cardinals in the second quarter. Carson Palmer led the Cardinals on a 93-yard drive to start the game, and Jonathan Dwyer ran around left end untouched for the score. Palmer played two series and finished 4 for 8 for 91 yards. Cassel was sharp in his only series last week against Oakland, and this time over a bigger sample size he was just as good, going 12 for 16 for 153 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers. Cassel even ran three times for 30 yards when nobody was open, but the middle of the field. His go-to target was Rudolph, the tight end who has returned for his fourth year much richer, a little slimmer and poised for a breakout season in the new scheme under offensive co-ordinator Norv Turner. After failing to hang on to a high throw in the back corner of the end zone on third-and-goal at the end of the first drive, Rudolph finished the second possession with a 51-yard catch and run into the end zone. "I want to have a big role in this offence, especially in the passing game. For me, its why you put in all the work," Rudolph said. ' ' '

Jose Mourinho is a fantastic commodity who can boost a clubs finances, says image rights expert Jon Elphick. Mourinho is expected to be confirmed within 48 hours as Uniteds third manager since Sir Alex Fergusons departure but the appointment is being delayed by a number of issues. Mourinho to sign by Friday Jose Mourinho to sign Manchester United contract by Friday Chelseas ownership of the rights to Mourinhos name and image is reportedly to be one of the stumbling blocks which has made the deal more complicated. Image rights expert Elphick explained to Sky Sports News how brand Mourinho can earn the club additional revenue in a number of different ways.Image rights provide a great opportunity for both the clubs and the individuals to earn a second income stream, Elphick told SSN HQ. Sir Alex Ferguson retired from management in 2013 after winning his 13th Premier League title in his final season The value of someone like Jose Mourinho to endorse products on behalf of Manchester United or Chelsea gives the club a huge opportunity to break into different territories, to secure valuable income outside of gate receipts and that sort of thing.Someone like Jose Mourinho is a fantastic commodity for different independent companies to earn money from. However, Elphick says there are a number of solutions to resolve the issue which crops up more often with players. Heres a look at some of Jose Mourinhos funniest moments in the Premier League ahead of his move to Manchester United Essentially it is a legal dispute, added Elphick.Jose Mourinho would have signed his rights away to Chelsea when he joined them. That gives them a number of options, either he can negotiate with Chelsea to buy back his rights to assign the rights to Manchester United or they can acquire the rights through a sub-licensing agreement.Players essentially do a very similar thing. When they join a club they will sign an agreement with the club that allows the club to use their image towards their commercial partners. Chris Young and rookie Eric Campbell delivered big hits off the bench in the late innings to rally New York past the Miami Marlins 5-4 on Saturday. Youngs pinch-hit, two-run homer off Bryan Morris tied it at 4 in the seventh. Campbell came through with a pinch-hit single in the eighth to put the Mets ahead. "That might be the biggest win of the year right there for us," manager Terry Collins said. Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out 10 in six innings and New York (44-50) executed a perfect suicide squeeze, moving to 7-2 on a 10-game homestand that leads into the All-Star break. Christian Yelich homered for the Marlins, who have lost four of five. With two outs in the eighth, Travis dArnaud doubled off left-hander Mike Dunn (7-5). Campbell batted for Kirk Nieuwenhuis and poked a soft single into centre to give the Mets their first lead. "I just didnt execute the pitch: 3-2 slider," Dunn said. "Left it over the plate. Pretty much the only bad slider I threw all inning." Vic Black (2-2) worked a scoreless inning, and Jenrry Mejia got three quick outs for his 10th save. It is the third time the Mets have won seven games on a homestand at Citi Field, which opened in 2009. All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy stretched high for a leaping grab that kept the game tied in the top of the eighth, eliciting a roar not heard very often at Citi Field lately. Many in the festive crowd of 35,283 stayed for a postgame concert by Huey Lewis and the News. "I still cant believe I saw that," dArnaud said. "He could dunk, I think, with how high he jumped." With his days in the rotation probably numbered, as long as Jonathon Niese comes out of the All-Star break healthy, Matsuzaka had his fourth career double-digit strikeout game. The other three came with Boston in 2007, his first season in the majors. "My slider was really good today, which contributed to those strikeouts, but I would rather have gone deeper in the game," Matsuzaka said through a translator. Marlins starter Tom Koehler, pitching about 12 miles from his New Rochelle hometown, tossed two-hit ball into the seventh and left with a 4-2 lead after a one-out walk to No. 8 batter Ruben Tejada. Young was batting .195 before launching Morris first pitch intoo the left-field stands for his second career pinch-hit homer.dddddddddddd The other came on June 27, 2012, with Arizona against Atlanta. "Never have I given up. I always realized how many games are left, how much is still possible," said Young, in his first season with the Mets after signing a $7.25 million, one-year contract. "The games ahead have nothing to do with the games that are past." Morris hadnt allowed an earned run in 21 1-3 innings over 17 games with Miami since arriving from Pittsburgh on June 1 -- the longest consecutive innings streak without yielding an earned run to begin a Marlins career. "Stroke of lightning that C.Y. dropped on em right there," Murphy said. Garrett Jones and Marcell Ozuna hit consecutive RBI doubles in the sixth off Matsuzaka to put Miami ahead 4-2. Adeiny Hechavarria hit a leadoff double in the Marlins third and scored when third baseman David Wright made an error on Donovan Solanos RBI grounder. With two on, Matsuzaka limited the damage by striking out slumping slugger Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee on sliders. Yelichs solo shot in the fifth cleared the right-centre fence near the 390-foot sign. It was only the third home run this season off Matsuzaka, who has thrown 71 innings. New York tied it 2-all in the bottom half after Yelich was slow to get back on Nieuwenhuis double at the left-field wall. Juan Lagares had an RBI groundout, and Nieuwenhuis dashed home on Tejadas suicide squeeze. "That was one we shouldve been able to lock down," Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "Weve had some struggles holding down a lead late in the game." NOTES: Marlins RHP Henderson Alvarez was added to the NL All-Star roster as a replacement for injured Washington pitcher Jordan Zimmermann. ... Collins said he might rest Murphy on Sunday before he heads to his first All-Star game. Campbell would probably start at second. ... RHP Bartolo Colon will start for the Mets in San Diego after the break. RHP Dillon Gee will be ready for that series but the team isnt counting on Niese (shoulder) that weekend, Collins said. Niese plans to throw Sunday and the Mets will wait to see how hes feeling before scheduling his return from the disabled list. ... New York rookie Jacob deGrom (2-5, 3.38 ERA) starts the series finale Sunday against LHP Brad Hand (0-1, 5.09). ' ' '
